A CREATIVE piece of artwork showing Ellesmere Port’s history currently adorns the walls of the Port Arcades.

Local artist Candida Boyes has designed a masterpiece for the glazed entrance canopy that is inspired by the ebb and flow of the waters and channels of the River Mersey, on the banks of which the prosperity of the town of Ellesmere Port first grew.

The image has been applied on sections of translucent film to the underside of the entrance canopy and serves to celebrate ideas and shapes formed by rivers, water and reflection.

Ellesmere Port owes its original creation to the Mersey and the canal links which brought industry and prosperity to the area, which the artist wanted to reflect when she designed the creative element for the artwork.

She said: “The three rivers linked by the canal system, Mersey, Dee and Severn, the Manchester Ship Canal and the important oil pipeline are represented by flowing forms running the length of the proposed glass entrance canopy.”

Port Arcades manager Les Lyon said: “Although produced by a printing process, the aim and ambition was to achieve an image that has the vibrant glowing translucent quality of coloured glass, to create a river of light above the heads of passing shoppers.

“This fantastic piece of artwork has already captured our shoppers’ imagination, with so many people stopping to admire it.”
