FANS hailed their Wrexham FC heroes at the weekend at the end of a roller-coaster season.

On Saturday council chiefs threw a civic reception at the Guildhall to applaud the team's valiant efforts.

The Dragons came back heroes after winning the LDV Vans trophy in a gripping game at Cardiff's Millennium stadium.

But after a turbulent season which saw the club placed into administration, they were unable to avoid relegation.

Administration meant they were docked 10 league points. And despite a terrific fight they were unable to stave off the drop to League Two.

On Saturday civic leaders welcomed the team and praised their endeavours in the face of a mounting crisis.

The players came out onto the Guildhall balcony to be met by cheering fans who were thanked for their support by manager Denis Smith.

The players were then treated to dinner in the Guildhall and a drink before heading off to Bangor-on-Dee races.

Dragons press officer Geraint Parry said: "The day went very well. When the players came out there was a brass band playing. And there were a few hundred fans on the green cheering and waving.

"It was always going to be difficult because the club was relegated this season. But it was good of the council to give the reception acknowledging the achievements of the team."

This season has seen fans back the team through some of the darkest moments in the club's history.

The clock is still ticking to find the club a buyer before it is kicked out of its historic Mold Road stadium.

Wrexham FC owner Alex Hamilton has a majority share in the club and the Racecourse freehold. He has issued an eviction order against the club with effect from July 21.

But administrator David Acland insisted the club will resist the notice.

Supporters favour a bid by Wrexham businessman Neville Dickens and Chester-based partner Geoff Moss.
