A WIRRAL student has overcome personal tragedy to be awarded a Diana Princess of Wales Memorial Award.

Steven Lightfoot, 16, from Park High School, Birkenhead, was nominated by his teachers.

Steven's father died as he was completing his GCSEs, which was three years after his mother died, and now his sister Jeanette Hall has taken over as his legal guardian.

Park High teacher Craig Whalley said Steven had shown great courage.

He said: "Steven always had a smile on his face and didn't let his grief prevent him finishing his exams.

"He made us feel a bit humble, which is why we put him forward for the award."

He said the awards were "for ordinary people who do extraordinary things - which Steven has".
