PENNY Lane's Millennium Green in south Liverpool could be renamed in honour of George Harrison.

Liverpool City Council's executive member for leisure, Warren Bradley, has revealed the authority is in talks with George's widow, Olivia, with a view to honouring the late Beatle as part of the Capital of Culture celebrations in 2008.

Coun Bradley said: "We have been in talks with George Harrison's widow and she says she is happy for us to honour him in some way.

"At present though, we have not talked about how this would be done.

"The Millennium Green in Penny Lane is one possibility but we are only at the very early stages - we cannot rule anything out but likewise we cannot rule anything in."

One of the ideas suggested is for the Green to be turned into a stop-off point for tourists who take the Beatles coach tour.

If such a move goes ahead it will come as a major relief for residents in the area who have seen the beauty spot deteriorate into an eyesore in recent times.

The site is overgrown and has been targeted by yobs who have vandalised the children's play area.

Money earmarked for its restoration was swallowed up as trustees sought to repair the damage - as a result, the Green has not been maintained. to tidy the green have been thwarted because it is not eligible for Objective 1 funding, or regeneration or renewal grants.

Despite the setbacks, Jim Gough, chairman of the Millennium Green, says he is hopeful a clear-up will take place within a month.
