THE Minister for Social Justice and Regeneration has awarded a grant to extend the team at Communities First in Queensway and Caia Park in Wrexham.

Edwina Hart has given Communities First a grant of £83,494.70 toward the funding of new staff.

The cash will help to pay for a play manager, assistant play manager, play worker and session worker at an adventure children's play centre in Gwenfro Valley.

The Communities First money has been allocated for a one-year period and will fill the funding gap in the project. Without this short-term assistance, the project would not have gone ahead.

Communities First is the Welsh Assembly's flagship programme for improving the opportunities and the quality of life for people living and working in the most disadvantaged communities in Wales.

Edwina Hart said: 'This provision will help provide a varied and safe play environment where young people and children can develop their social, creative and practical skills and participate in an active and healthy lifestyle.

'Communities First is different from previous funding streams as it allows communities to decide for themselves what facilities they need to make improvements to their lives.

'We want to encourage creativity, risk-taking and imaginative approaches, which will make long-term improvements to the lives of people in Wales's least well-off areas.'
