A WOMAN killed in a car smash on the M56 near Ellesmere Port last week has been named by police.

Sixty-five-year-old grandmother Jennifer Jones of Powys, Welshpool, died after her car was involved in a collision on the M56 eastbound carriageway near the Hapsford junction on Thursday evening.

Mrs Jones, a former teacher who had been travelling in the car with four members of her family, was airlifted to the Countess of Chester Hospital where she later died from her injuries.

One of the passengers remains in hospital being treated for serious injuries while the other three have since been discharged after receiving minor injuries.

All three lanes had to be closed as emergency services dealt with the incident, causing huge tailbacks on the motorway and leaving motorists at a standstill for hours.

Mrs Jones was this week described as a deeply loved wife, mother, and grandmother, and an active and valued member of her local community.

CHESHIRE police are appealing to anyone who may have information relating to the collision or anyone who witnessed the accident to contact them using the 101 number quoting incident number 607 of May 23.
