PLANS to bring Stanlow oil refinery to a standstill are being organised on Facebook.

A group is calling for a go-slow protest at the Shell refinery in Oil Sites Road from 7.30-11.30pm on Friday, January 28.

The time has been chosen by organisers, who are keen to disrupt lorries at Stanlow rather than members of the public.

The group has been created by Kevin Bowker and Stephen Johnstone who wrote: “If you are sick of the price of petrol then don’t just sit there… please join in.”

A supporter, Jonathan Gilliatt, said: “People have to see what the price of fuel is doing to the country! If a protest affects people – then the Government is more likely to sit up and take note!”

But the group has also attracted some dissenting voices, who say the protest will hold up traffic and affect the general public.

Francis Doherty wrote: “Thanks for creating a traffic jam for me you morons! I don’t dictate fuel prices so why make me suffer?”

Another, Simon Searle, said: “Don’t hold me up either, I have a job to do, non-related to Stanlow but have to pass there, and I will be wanting to get from A2B.”

Shell spokesman Ed Brady would not be drawn on the matter, and said: “We never discuss security matters.”
