A GO-SLOW fuel protest which passed through Ellesmere Port on its way to North Wales has been hailed a success.

About 70 vehicles left the M56 Hapsford Services at 10.45am heading along the A5117 and on to the M53 towards Colwyn Bay to deliver a petition to the Welsh Assembly’s transport office demanding action over soaring petrol prices.

By the time they arrived at around 1.30pm the convoy had grown to between 100 and 150 vehicles.

The protest was organised by motorists Mark Waterworth and Gwil Ritchie from Ryhl who jointly set up an action group on Facebook last month called Fuel Protest 2008 North West UK and Wales, which has over 9,000 members.

Mr Waterworth, 36, said: “I’m over the moon. I can’t believe the support we’ve had. The convoy must have been a mile long.”

He added that they were planning further protest action, possibly on Saturday, July 19.
