A QUESTION mark hangs over the future of a popular children’s playbus which has served the community for more than 30 years.
Meadow Farm Playbus Association, based at Hope Farm shops in Great Sutton, has been told by the borough council that, as of Friday, it can no longer park the vehicle overnight at its depot in Rossmore.
Playbus manager Jane Fisher is “appalled” that they are having to move and is now appealing for help in finding a long-term home.
The council’s head of environmental services Mike Whittaker says essential work will begin soon on digging up the yard at the depot to replace underground fuel tanks so there would be no room for the playbus to remain there.
Mrs Fisher said: “I’m really appalled at how this has come about. It now leaves us with an uncertain future.
“We’ve never paid to park there but the council had provided us with a slot as a goodwill gesture.
“Our driver is a volunteer whose children and grandchildren have used the playbus, I can’t expect him to go all over the place to pick the bus up.
“The nice chaps at E Nixon and Sons in Oil Sites Road are going to let us park there for free while we need to but we really need to find a long-term solution.”
Mr Whittaker said: “We have to dig up the depot yard space for essential repairs and while this work is done we do not have any option other than to ask for the bus to be moved because there will not be the room for it to be parked.
“This work will inconvenience all parking and traffic movements at the depot.
“As things are, space is extremely tight at the depot with very large vehicles moving around all day and then we have to use all available space for parking overnight.
“There are also health and safety issues to consider and the parking and moving of a playbus is not the most ideal situation to have at a fully operational and busy depot.
“However, the last thing we want to do is upset anybody and we are working with the county council and the playbus organisers to find a suitable home for it.”
