ANDERTON Boat Lift proved its attraction to waterways fans when more than 4,000 of them defied the poor weather to attend a family fun weekend.

Activities ranged from free entry to the boat lift’s new exhibition to falconry displays and boat trips on the Edwin Clark.

More free access to the boat lift exhibition is lined up next month when bosses celebrate National Heritage Weekend on September 13 and 14.

Meanwhile, plans are taking shape to capture the structure – also known as the Cathedral Of The Canals – in verse for National Poetry Day on October 9.

National Poetry Day poet-in-residence, Paul Farley, has been commissioned to write a poem about the lift for the occasion.

The poem will be available to read on www.nationalpoetryday.co.uk nearer the time.
