POLICE are getting tough on fuel thieves by launching a special operation to collar them.

For the past few months, as UK pump prices soared, crooks have been siphoning petrol and diesel from cars and lorries across Ellesmere Port.

But now police are clamping down on the fuel-tank raiders, and also on thieves stealing metal and cars from driveways.

Inspector Richard Rees outlined the plan at Ellesmere Port’s “Have Your Say” (formerly Police Forum) meeting in the Civic Hall.

He explained: “There has been the theft of metal items recently, including copper piping from buildings, and also cars which have been put on to low-loaders and driven away.

“There’s also been the theft of diesel.

“HGVs parked in the Westminster and other areas of Ellesmere Port have been having their tanks siphoned by thieves, and 200-300 litres of diesel have been taken.

“If anyone has any information about any of these crimes, they must call us immediately.”

Back in June, the Pioneer revealed that during one two-week period there were 14 thefts of fuel from cars, lorries and other machinery. Even homes which use oil to fire their central heating were hit.

Detective Chief Inspector Brian Roberts, crime manager for the Western Area, said at the time: “Typically the liquid is siphoned out, but in some cases culprits have cut fuel pipes to drain tanks dry.”

Police advise people to keep their vehicles in garages or lock-ups, install lockable petrol caps, and park in well-lit areas which are likely to be busy.

If you spot anyone acting suspiciously around any vehicle, call police on 0845 4580000 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
