SECOND Division results elsewhere over the weekend left Wrexham manager Denis Smith even more frustrated yesterday than he was immediately following his side's 1-0 home defeat by Tranmere Rovers.

That reverse cost the Dragons an opportunity to move to within two points of the play-off positions, with a game in hand over some of their rivals, including next opponents Port Vale.

"It makes Saturday's result worse knowing what might have been," said the Racecourse boss.

"If we had played anything like we can, we could have beaten Tranmere.

"It's doubly frustrating that we've made things harder for ourselves."

On the other hand - as Smith was quick to point out -Wrexham's destiny is still very much in their own hands and next week's Easter programme could be make-or-break time.

Following Saturday's short trip to Vale Park, the Dragons are at home to fellow-contenders Hartlepool United.

"The opportunity is still there for us and we have one more game than some of the others to take it," he added.

"But next weekend brings a big couple of games for us. Lose them both and we can kiss it goodbye, but if wewin the two we'll be right back in there."

Wrexham will be without suspended skipper Darren Ferguson for both matches, while defender Craig Morgan sits out the Port Vale clash after both players were sent off at Plymouth Argyle 10 days ago.

Wing-back Paul Edwards became the club's seventh sending-off this season following his dismissal against Tran-mere but his one-match ban won't kick in until the Colchester away game in just under a fortnight.

Of more immediate concern to Smith is a growing injury list at the Racecourse.

Brian Carey, Steve Roberts, Steve Thomas and Carlos Edwards were in the treatment room yesterday for a variety of knocks. They replaced Hector Sam, Jim Whitley, Shaun Pejic and Lee Jones, who resumed light training after their recent lay-offs.

"It's early days but I'm hoping the lads who were injured on Saturday are not too serious and that the other four will be available for selection at the end of the week," said Smith.

Meanwhile, representatives of the club's supporters' groups have agreed a draft constitution for Wrexham First, an umbrella organisation set up to help the club get through its current cash-flow problems.

A spokesman said: "The new constitution will be considered for agreement at our next meeting prior to the home game against Luton.

"This united front aims to promote positive Press coverage of Wrexham and to raise money through a variety of initiatives. In the meantime, anyone with the club's interests at heart is encouraged to join their appropriate supporters organisation."
