THE trial of a former professional footballer accused of attacking a man in a pub car park has collapsed after the jury failed to reach a verdict.

Ex-Manchester City captain Andy Morrison will now be re-tried next month after Judge Nicholas Woodward dismissed the jury on Friday afternoon. Morrison, of Ashton Close, KIngsmead, is charged with actual bodily harm following an alleged assault outside the Winnington Lodge on February 3.

The 37-year-old had played for Bowling Green in a 4-2 defeat by Broadhurst in a Mid Cheshire Sunday League game at Moss Farm earlier in the day. The complainant, Peter Wilson, had played for the opposition.

Judge Woodward told the jury he would accept a 10-2 majority verdict after hearing two days of evidence, but after six hours of deliberation no verdict was reached.

Morrison will stand trial again on August 13.
