A FORMER mayoress of Ellesmere Port has died aged 84.

Mrs Mabel Wess, formerly Mrs Mabel Brown, was mayoress of Ellesmere Port in 1969 and her husband and sister were long-serving councillors on both Ellesmere Port District and Cheshire County Council.

She came to Ellesmere Port from Leamington Spa in 1963 when she married Neville Brown, who served as an alderman and district councillor for Ellesmere Port for many years.

Her sister Isabelle Reeves also served as a district councillor for almost 30 years. Both served as Cheshire county councillors.

Neville and Mabel became the mayor and mayoress of Ellesmere Port in 1969 and hosted one of the early twinning visits from Reutlingen in Germany.

After Neville’s death in 1979, she married Jack Wess in 1996. Both had been widowed and were former employees of Barclays Bank, Jack having been manager of Barclays in Ellesmere Port for a number of years. Jack passed away in 2004.

Mabel loved animals and for a number of years was the treasurer of the Wirral and Chester Branch of the RSPCA. She retained a wide circle of local friends and will be sadly missed by all.
