WINSFORD United failed to rediscover the form that saw them claim last week’s impressive win at Ramsbottom United.
The struggling Blues missed their chance to pull further away from the Vodkat Premier League’s relegation candidates on Saturday as they went down 1-0 at home to eighth-placed Silsden.
The Blues were wasteful in front of goal, missing a glut of chances, but they were handed the perfect opportunity to capitalise on their superiority when Darren Connell was felled by Cobbydalers’ keeper Martin Foulger.
Connell dusted himself down and struck his spot kick but to the disappointment of the 69 spectators at the Barton Stadium, Foulger saved.
Winsford, who are just seven points ahead of second-from-bottom St Helens Town, then suffered a sucker punch.
On 64 minutes, a long free kick was met by Aaron Hollindrake who headed past young keeper Christopher Stanley.
Winsford, who have five games left to secure their Premier status, visit Cheshire rivals Congleton Town this Saturday (3pm).
On Easter Monday, the Blues host Alsager Town (3pm).
