THREE new faces will be hoping to guide Winsford United to the top of the Vodkat Premier League next season.

Familiar face Terry Murphy will be joined by two assistant managers, Mike Alcock and a third, mystery man, who will look to bring in some “exciting” young players to the Barton Stadium.

Manager Terry Murphy said: “I don’t just want to be one of the runners, I want to be at the top. I need to win and I want players that want to win too.

“I have spoken to a lot of my old lads and there are players willing to come. I want the best that is available to me.”

Murphy, who has managed Northwich Victoria, Middlewich Town, Witton Albion, Barnton and now Winsford United, understandably has extensive knowledge of Mid Cheshire football and amassed an unrivalled trophy haul.

Club secretary Bob Astles said: “Terry is very well known at this level and is someone who knows the league and the players. That is why we chose him.

“There was another option but we are now looking to combine the two and have another assistant manager as well as Mike Alcock. This other person will hopefully be bringing with him some young, exciting players.

“We need a change of direction and we want more development. These players have got ability, they made it to the fourth round of the FA Youth Cup, we want people that aren’t just coming for the money.

“We are all looking forward to the new season.

“He has promised to bring in the best of the local players and the team will be a blend of youth and experience,” said Bob Astles.

“We are optimistic the club can begin the climb back to where we really belong.”

The duo of Murphy and Alcock guided Middlewich Town to three Cheshire League titles and the treble in 2007 during a seven year spell in which the club never failed to finish outside of the top two.

It is thought the majority of out-going manager Joe Gibiliru’s squad will leave the Barton Stadium, as the club, who escaped relegation this season, look for a complete overhaul.

Chairman Mark Loveless said: “Terry will be starting from scratch. That won’t be easy and the supporters will have to be patient, particularly as he will be working with a very small budget by our standards.”
