HUNDREDS of people turned out to watch a host of Merseyside footballing legends roll back the years during a massive charity event in memory of an Ellesmere Port woman.

The Jane Lowe Memorial Day on Sunday, which was organised by her family including her 12-year-old daughter Faye, helped raise thousands of pounds for the Hospice of the Good Shepherd.

Jane, 32, lost her two-year battle with a rare form of cancer in August last year. It had started in her sinuses before spreading to her neck and spine.

Lee McDonnell, the partner of Jane’s sister Sarah Lowe, had been planning the event since the beginning of the year with the help of Faye, who attends Ellesmere Port Catholic High School.

On the day a football match between Tranmere Rovers and Marine legends took place at Rivacre Park – the home of Vauxhall Motors FC – which Tranmere won 4-0.

Former Liverpool star Joey Jones was there to back the event and the likes of Eric Nixon, Shaun Garnett, Ian Muir, and ex-Whitby High School student Dave Challinor played in the match.

A memorabilia auction, which included a signed 1966 World Cup shirt and an Everton jersey worn by goalkeeper Carlo Nash, was held during the event and there was also live music, stand up bingo and comedians.

Mr McDonnell, 36, who played for the Tranmere Rovers team, said: “It was a fantastic day, beyond our wildest dreams. It was a very competitive match, you don’t realise just how good these players are.

“Faye had a fantastic day. She picked Kenny Irons as the man of the match and presented him with the award. I’d like to thank everyone for coming.”
