NEWI Cefn Druids could not wreck Rhyl’s Welsh Premier League title party on Saturday as they went down 4-2 at home to the newly-crowned champions in their final game of the season.
The Ancients were looking to become the only side to do the double over the big-spending Lilywhites and end their 18-match unbeaten away record. But there was never going to be any chance of repeating their December Belle Vue success after Mark Connolly and George Horan fired the visitors into a two-goal lead inside the first 21 minutes.
Lee T Jones, with an excellent free kick, reduced the deficit for the hosts three minutes later before Matthew Williams restored Rhyl’s two-goal advantage just shy of the hour mark.
Druids, who finish 13th, got themselves back into the game with 19 minutes to play when a defensive mix-up allowed Geraint Lewis to unleash a cracking volley. But their hopes of another famous win were dashed moments later when Williams notched his second.
Gresford Athletic moved a point closer to Cymru Alliance safety on Saturday after Mike Pugh’s 90th-minute equaliser earned them a 1-1 draw at home to Buckley Town.
Aaron Aby struck late on as Lex XI snatched a 1-1 home draw of their own against Llanfairpwll.
Gresford’s final game of the campaign comes at Lex on Saturday (2.30pm).
