A LATE Ricky Evans penalty and a wonder-strike from Kevin Holsgrove condemned Caersws to the Welsh Premier League drop on Saturday while guaranteeing NEWI Cefn Druids are now safe from relegation.

Druids made the trip to Mid Wales knowing only a set of freak of results would drag them into the bottom two. But they ensured they can go into Saturday’s final game of the season at home to newly-crowned champions Rhyl (2.30pm) with the pressure off.

It was the hosts who opened the scoring, though, in the third minute through Chris Melia. And that was the way it stayed until 16 minutes from time when Kevin Holgsrove struck with a super solo effort.

A point would still have been enough to give Caersws one final shot at survival, but their hopes were extinguished in the 88th minute when Evans slotted home from the spot after Mark Davies was sent off for a professional foul on Holgsrove.

Gresford Athletic gave their Cymru Alliance survival prospects a boost on Saturday by holding champions-elect Bala Town to a 0-0 home draw. But it was a bad afternoon for Lex XI as they went down 4-0 at Llandudno.

Lex are at home to Llanfairpwll on Saturday while Gresford host Buckley Town (both 2.30pm).

The Welsh National League Premier Division’s Penycae lost Saturday’s NEWFA Challenge Cup semi-final 1-0 to the Cymru Alliance’s Mynydd Isa.
