FIVE people were fortunate to escape serious injury when their car left the road and rolled over several times.

The Renault Megane was travelling towards Elton on the A5117 near to the Shell oil refinery about 10.30pm on Sunday when it left the road before coming to rest in a ditch.

Everyone was out of the vehicle when emergency crews arrived.

But the driver had suffered “a nasty cut”, while one passenger was carried into an ambulance on a spinal board as a precautionary measure due to back pain.

Fire crews said many of those inside would require stitches for cuts but none of the injuries was life-threatening.

It is believed the people in the front were wearing seat-belts, but not those in the back.

Emergency services said the incident was a reminder about the need to wear seat-belts at all times.

Firefighters said it was fortunate the car did not collide with one of the many beech trees which line the road.

However, it only narrowly avoided hitting one of them.

The road was closed for some time due to the number of emergency vehicles in attendance.
