THE inaugural ‘Salt Sunday’ event takes place on Sunday, May 17 at the Lion Salt Works at Marston, to celebrate God’s gifts of salt and chemical industries in the Weaver Valley.

The Bishop of Birkenhead, Rev Keith Sinclair, will be leading a service of worship at the works on Ollershaw Lane at 4pm.

A spokesman said: “This will be the very first Salt Sunday in what will become an annual service of worship to thank God for the natural resources of salt and water which have been used over thousands of years to bring life, health and wealth to the area.

“The day starts at 2pm and all are welcome to bring a picnic and join in the short service. There will also be the opportunity to look around the visitor centre, and the Witton Church Walk Primary School choir will be singing throughout the afternoon.”

Salt Sunday is part of the Salt of the Earth initiative formed in 2008 by the area’s representatives from industry, churches, community groups and schools.
