CHESHIRE firefighters dropped into an Ellesmere Port school as part of their firework safety campaign.

Officers visited pupils at The Acorns Primary School, Pooltown Road, in a bid to reduce the number of accidents on Bonfire Night.

They hope the children then went home and passed the message on to their parents, to ensure the whole family will be kept safe.

The fire service was visiting numerous county schools in the run-up to November 5 to explain to youngsters that, while watching fireworks can be fun, they are explosives and need careful handling and storage.

The initiative is being run in conjunction with the Government Office North West.

Consumer minister Gareth Thomas said: “Even if you think you know how to handle fireworks, failing to follow the Firework Code properly puts you and your loved ones in danger.”

Mark Cashin, Cheshire’s Deputy Chief Fire Officer – Community Risk Reduction, said: “I appeal to everyone who is either having a display at home or attending an organised display to take great care this Bonfire Night and follow the Firework Code.”

Children can access the firework code for their family and play some firework games in safety via www.BERR.gov.uk/fireworks/index.htm

The Child Accident Prevention Trust (www.capt.org.uk) and Direct Gov on www.direct.gov.uk both give useful guidance on keeping kids safe.
