WREXHAM'S retained firefighters handed over donations totalling £5,520 raised during a sponsored walk with a difference.

The firefighters took to the streets of the town last month for a 10-mile walk and donned heavy full fire kit and breathing apparatus on a warm June day.

At the presentation ceremony held at Wrexham Fire Station organisers presented cheques to representatives from the Leukaemia and Allied Blood Disease Fund at the Shooting Star Unit, Wrexham Maelor Hospital, the Testicular Cancer Fund at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd and the Fire Services National Benevolent Fund.

Dave Bithell, watch manager in Wrexham and one of the organisers of the event, said: 'We are thrilled that we have been able to raise such an excellent amount of money for such deserving charities.

'We would like to thank the officers from North Wales Fire and Rescue Service, our colleagues at Wrexham, Llangollen, Johnstown and Mold fire stations and the retailers and people of Wrexham for supporting us!'
