CHESHIRE fire service is installing CCTV cameras on fire engines in Widnes after a series of attacks on their vehicles.

According to the police and fire in Cheshire, the number of attacks by young people has been escalating over the past few days.

Police say they suspect that the increase is largely down to the fact that it has been half-term and some youngsters have had "more time on their hands".

There have been more than 30 similar "anti-social behaviour" incidents reported in February, ranging from

members of the public who have had their homes and vehicles targeted, to youths throwing stones and bricks at moving vehicles.

And during the last few days Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service officers have also been targeted while attempting to put out fires. Widnes police

inspector, Nick Bailey, said those responsible were putting people's lives at risk "and obviously don't understand the serious consequences of their actions"."

Alan Ellis, Emergency Response Area Manager with Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service, added: "The recent

spate of attacks is extremely concerning and as well as working closely with the police we are also taking action ourselves."
