WREXHAM Fencing Club aces played a starring role as Wales won the Senior Winton Cup.

Such is the success of the Ysgol Clywedog-based club, seven of its members made their way to the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield for one of the biggest events on the British fencing calendar.

And the performances of David Gregory, Ben Hughes, Ben Roberts, Daniel Lumb, Lydia Johnson, Carolyn Benson and Stephanie Collister ensured Wales returned to the Principality with the cup in the bag for the first time this century.

While Gregory, Johnson and Benson are all seasoned Wales stars, the competition marked the first time their four clubmates had appeared on the senior international stage. But they showed no signs of nerves as Wales stormed to glory without tasting defeat.

Steven Unitt and Keir McGillivray warmed up for their trip to Germany by representing Wrexham at the Warwick Epee Under 13s in the Leon Paul Junior Series.

Steven and Keir could not get further than the last 64 and last 32 respectively, but their bouts acted as the perfect preparation for when they head to Ludenscheid next month to take on fencers from Wrexham’s twin town.
