FANS from across Britain have again showed solidarity with their Wrexham counterparts.

Supporters from 55 different clubs, including Wrexham's bitter rivals Tranmere Rovers, Chester City and Cardiff City, turned up at the Racecourse on Saturday in their own team's kits to stand alongside the home fans.

They were showing their support for the campaign to keep the club at its traditional home.

There may be some light at the end of the tunnel now, as a deal over ownership looks more certain to be concluded between current owner Alex Hamilton and prospective buyer Andy Smith.

'Fans at Saturday's game proved that rich club or poor club fans at all levels appreciate that without the pyramid system and the historic clubs that occupy it, the game just isn't the same,' said a spokesman for Fans United, a group started by Brighton fans which has now grown to organise events at all clubs in crisis.

At half time all the Fans United supporters went on a procession around the pitch carrying banners emblazoned with the words Wrexham and Falmer, the name of the community stadium Brighton want to create as their home after having their former ground sold.

'This event shows businessmen involved in football that other businesses come and go but true football fans will never desert their club.'

More than 20 fans from Chester City made the journey across the border to stand shoulder to shoulder with their rivals on the Racecourse Kop.

Wrexham manager Denis Smith said: 'It was brilliant to see the fans in the stands and we need that.

'It's looking like there's going to be good news off the field, which is a big relief, but we still need crowds coming through the door, because there are salaries to pay.

'We were very pleased with the turnout on Saturday. It really helps.'

Among the fans supporting Wrexham on Saturday were 25 QPR fans who hired a coach and travelled from London. Around 100 Bradford City, 50 Barnsley and 40 Chesterfield fans joined in too as their clubs have all experienced similar difficulties to Wrexham.

At the ground were fans from Altrincham, Arsenal, Aston Villa, Barnsley, Birmingham City, Blackpool, Bolton Wanderers, Bradford City, Brechin, Brighton & Hove Albion, Bristol City, Burnley, Cardiff City, Chelsea, Chester City, Colwyn Bay, Coventry City, Crewe Alexandra, Crystal Palace, Everton, Grimsby Town, Hull City, Ipswich Town, Leeds United, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Middlesbrough, Millwall, Newcastle United, Northampton Town, Norwich City, Plymouth Argyle, Port Vale, Portsmouth, Preston North End, Queens Park Rangers, Rotherham United, Scarborough, Scunthorpe United, Sheffield United, Sheffield Wednesday, Stockport County, Stoke City, Sunderland, Swansea City, Tottenham Hotspur, Tranmere Rovers, VS Rugby, Watford, West Bromwich Albion, Wheatstone United, Wigan Athletic, Wolverhampton Wanderers and York City.
