THE family of a grandmother missing in Gran Canaria for a week last night urged her to get in touch.

Eileen Owen, 53, from Abercynon, Mountain Ash, in Rhondda Cynon Taf, was on holiday with her husband Michael when she vanished from their Puerto Rico apartment in the early hours of last Sunday.

Mrs Owen's sister, Janet Williams, said the college receptionist and grandmother-of-two did not take any money or her passport with her.

Spanish police are investigating the dis-appearance and have distributed posters of Mrs Owen around the island.

The couple's children Nicola, 35, and Neil, 29, have flown out to help search for their mother who was due home on Tuesday.

The Owens were nearing the end of a week's holiday on the island and Miss Williams said everything appeared to be fine.

But when Mr Owen woke up at 2am on Sunday his wife had vanished.

Miss Williams, who has been in close contact with her brother-in-law, said: "It seems that something may have been on her mind.

"She was obsessed with people looking at her and talking about her at the hotel.

She had seemed to be in a strange mood."

She said the disappearance was "out of character" and she had bought presents for her grandchildren, indicating she was planning to come home.

"She is not a person who would go to Cardiff alone, let alone a foreign country" said Miss Williams.

Mrs Owen is of medium build, around 5ft 1in tall with dark hair and small features. She was last seen wearing black trousers and a pink t-shirt.

A spokeswoman for the Foreign Office said: "A police investigation is under way and posters have been displayed, including in the consulate in Las Palmas."
