A BLIND disabled man and his elderly parents had a narrow escape after thugs put a lit firework through their door in a 'stupid and dangerous' prank.

Nhi M Chi and her husband Tac P Luc put out the flames with a bucket of water after the banger was shoved through their letterbox.

They and their son Akon were not harmed in the Bonfire Night drama, but were left very shaken. Akon was given some oxygen as a precaution.

City police do not believe the attack was racially motivated.

The family, who live in Durham Road, Blacon, do not speak very much English but, with the help of their daughter acting as interpreter, they spoke a little about their ordeal.

They said they had been 'very frightened' when the firework was pushed through their front door about 8.35pm.

Mrs Chi showed The Chronicle the strip of linoleum which had been inside their door, and which bore the brunt of the blaze.

She put the flames out with a bucket of water and a teatowel. The rest of the property was lightly smoke-damaged.

The family were very 'shocked and shaken' afterwards, and were concerned for Akon's health and safety. No-one was hurt in the drama.

Chester Fire Station sub-officer Tony Jones blasted the pranksters who did this.

'I cannot stress highly enough the sheer stupidity and potential danger of this, quite apart from any legal implications for the perpetrators,' he said.

Two engines from Chester attended the blaze, as well as the brigade's Community Fire Safety Officer and the police.

'We gave some oxygen to the son and ventilated the house. The fire was confined to the vinyl floor covering inside the front door.

'These people have also had a home safety check because there were no smoke detectors there,' added sub-officer Jones.
