VAUXHALL Motors has expressed sadness at the shock death of Gary Speed.

Mr Speed’s father Roger worked at the plant in the 1970s.

Speaking earlier this year after Vauxhall became the official sponsor of the Football Association Wales (FAW), Mr Speed said: “My dad was on the production line making Astras in the 70s.

“He worked there for about 10 years and the family have always had Vauxhalls. I remember being ferried around in a Viva as a youngster.”

Vauxhall Motors issued the following statement: “Everyone at Vauxhall sends their condolences to Gary’s family, his friends and colleagues at the FAW and the whole of Welsh football.

“Gary was a truly great player, manager, servant and ambassador over many, many years for Wales.

“This is a tremendous loss not just for Wales but for the whole of the football family.

“Gary afforded Vauxhall great co-operation, support and friendship in our first year of official sponsorship and was an incredibly popular guest at Vauxhall events.”
