BALLOONS released at an Ellesmere Port school ended up in Sweden and Denmark.

Whitby High staff and pupils were delighted to receive replies from people around the UK after their eco-friendly balloon launch, but were surprised when they also got the responses from Scandinavia.

The launch was held in celebration of World Book Day and National Year of Reading 2008.

It was designed for pupils to share their favourite book with whoever found their balloon.

Prizes were awarded to those pupils whose replies came from the farthest away from Whitby.

Laura Carter, head of English, said: “We were delighted to receive replies from Buxton and Lincoln, but were amazed when we received replies from Denmark and Sweden.”

Stefan Andersson, who replied from Sweden, said in a note: “It’s ironic that a balloon sent from Cheshire should end up in (his town) Vimmberby because it is where famous children’s author Astrid Lingren was born and where many of her fairy tales take place.”
