CHURCHES of all denominations in the rural Wrexham area are invited to join a new Sacred Space project.

It aims to use churchyards to discover more about the local wildlife and history.

The project would not only involve people already associated with the churches, but also people in the wider community – including children.

Volunteers could help with survey work and managing the areas to promote the conservation and appreciation of wildlife features, as well as collecting information from the gravestones.

The information gathered would be used to create interpretative panels in the churchyards and on a website.

An initial consultation meeting for representatives of churches that are interested in the project will be held at St Mary’s Church, Ruabon, on Monday, July 21, at 7pm.

The Sacred Space project is one of 28 projects approved in the Rural Development Plan for Wrexham, funded by the Welsh Assembly Government and the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development, with the remainder coming from match funding and volunteer time.
