EMPLOYEES at Essar Oil’s Stanlow plant saddled up to raise more than £5,000 for the British Heart Foundation.

The dedicated workers were praised by the charity for their ‘outstanding achievement‘ following their fundraising cycle ride in memory of refinery production manager Mal Parker, who died last June.

A total of £2,500 was raised by the cyclists themselves before their donations were matched by Stanlow site manager Jon Mason, whose pledge on behalf of the company brought the total donation to the charity to £5,134.

Graham Cox, chairman of the British Heart Foundation’s south Wirral branch, visited Stanlow to accept the donation and congratulate the cyclists on their achievement.

He said: “This significant donation to our charity is a wonderful gesture from Stanlow employees.

“I can assure them that the money will be well spent as we are putting it toward our Mending Broken Hearts campaign, which is now two years into a five-year run.

“My very best wishes and grateful thanks to all at Essar Oil.”

Stanlow inspector Billy Picton added: “Mal’s tragic death was a great loss for his family, friends and colleagues so we wanted to do something to commemorate his life and support a charity whose principal aim is to prevent coronary heart disease.

“Our success was due to Stanlow employees digging deep and bringing about such a great total.

“I can’t thank them enough.”
