A MAN bidding to be the world’s oldest wrestler is appearing on national television.

Buddy Ward, of Little Sutton, will star in Russell Howard’s Good News programme on BBC Three on Thursday..

The satirical show sees Russell put his spin on the week’s headlines, as well as highlighting some of the more overlooked stories that have caught his eye as he sifts through the papers, news websites and TV news channels.

Buddy stars in the show, which is recorded in front of a live studio audience, just days before his Easter weekend clash with Johnny Saint at Ellesmere Port Civic Hall.

He hopes to become the Guinness World Record holder for being the oldest wrestler on the night.

Buddy has had six wives and 30 children who will be cheering him on on the night.

The match, on Saturday, April 3, will be Buddy’s 4,000th and his first in more than 30 years.

Buddy said: “I am looking forward to it.

“I started wrestling in 1959 and wrestled in Ellesmere Port for many years.

“I’ve beaten Johnny a couple of times and he knows what I can do.

“He’s wrestled every year since 1958, he is a very good wrestler.

“People are in for a great night and tickets have been selling well.

“We are raising money for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) on the night and holding a raffle.”

Russell Howard’s Good News airs on Thursday, April 1, at 11pm on BBC three.

The wrestling match takes place at Ellesmere Port Civic Hall on Saturday, April 3, at 7.30pm.

Tickets are children £10, adults £12, family of four £36.
