A primary school in Ellesmere Port scooped a national award after a technology challenge.

Children from Rossmore Primary showed how they could safely use the web and were treated to a trip to Westminster and won £1,200 for their school.

MP for Ellesmere Port and Neston Andrew Miller and Minister for Cyber Security Chloe Smith MP announced the winning schools in the seventh ‘Make IT Happy’ competition at a ceremony in the Houses of Parliament.

The Make IT Happy competition is a UK-wide technology challenge for primary school students aged nine-11.

This year’s theme ‘Make IT Happy, Make IT Safe’ focused on internet, email and password safety.

Andrew Miller said: “Rossmore School was one of two winners from the North West and I am absolutely delighted that the school has led the way in showing how important cyber security is.

“The children and their teachers deserve the highest praise for the hard work they obviously put into their entry and it was a pleasure to meet them all at the House of Commons award event.”

Headteacher of Rossmore School, Susan Davis-McCoy, who attended the ceremony, said: “The project was successful as the children were able to demonstrate an understanding on how to be safe when using the internet. They were able to use their skills to relay an important message to the whole school.

“The trip to London was a memorable experience and a very interesting insight into the workings and history of Parliament. With the added bonus of a trip on the London Eye, sightseeing historic landmarks and a very warm welcome from our MP Andrew Miller. We all had an amazing day.”
