A SERIAL car thief has been jailed after admitting stealing his father’s car as well as a £30,000 vehicle from a showroom.

Anthony Baldwin, 24, originally from Ellesmere Port, appeared at Chester Crown Court on Tuesday after he committed seven offences on July 2, described by his defence lawyer as ‘an orgy of self destruction’.

The court heard how between 1.30am and 2.30am, Baldwin had taken his dad’s Vauxhall Meriva before crashing it a short distance from the Lexus showroom in Little Stanney.

Baldwin then smashed the window of a Lexus on the forecourt but he could not get the car to start. He then smashed the window of the showroom before taking a £30,000 Lexus and driving it through security barriers.

Four miles later, the car ran out of petrol and was left abandoned. The following day Baldwin handed himself in to police in Ellesmere Port.

The offences committed on the night were: burglary, vehicle taking, criminal damage, driving while disqualified and without insurance and aggravated vehicle taking.

The court heard how Baldwin, appearing in a blue T-shirt, had received six previous convictions including 24 offences, many involving the taking of a vehicle and driving while disqualified.

Presiding, Judge Roger Dutton sentenced Baldwin to two years in prison and he was disqualified from driving for two years.

Judge Dutton said: "This was a serious series of criminal offences.

"This was mean, it was nasty and showed no respect for those whom you should owe respect. If you want to rekindle your family relationships then you have a lot of work to do.

"You must sort yourself out. If you do not then you will spend half of your life in prison.”
