A FORMER Whitby High School pupil who has danced with pop superstars including Kylie, Robbie Williams and Girls Aloud is bringing his successful street dance school to his hometown.

John Pemberton grew up in Capenhurst and now lives in Glossop, where he runs Dynamite Dance Academy – the North West’s largest dance school.

John set up Dynamite four years ago, after training as a dancer in Liverpool and Warrington. The academy now has more than 1,500 members – and has held the title of North West Street Dance Champions for the last three years.

John said: “Where I lived there was nothing. It’s just grown and grown and grown. We have got two-year-olds through to people in their 50s.”

Now the 32-year-old has brought his academy – teaching street dance, hip hop and break dance to students of all ages – to Ellesmere Port.

He added: “With me being from the area, I have always had loads of people saying I should start something here. It’s something that’s been needed in the area for a long time.

“To move back home to an area where I know people – it’s great.”

And the classes have already proved a hit, with more than 70 eager pupils turning out for last Wednesday’s launch.

John said: “I thought I was going to have about five or six, but the queue was out the door. It’s especially brilliant to see so many boys.

“It’s going to be really, really popular. Dynamite Dance is about introducing students to an extended family.”

John will be teaching four classes on Wednesday evenings at Stanney Grange Community Centre in Alnwich Drive, beginning with street dance for three-six-year-olds from 5-5.45pm.

A class for seven-12-year-olds follows from 6-7pm, with a session for 13-17-year-olds from 7-8pm and an adults class from 8-9pm.

Each lesson is £5, with a discount for siblings.
