Firefighters in Ellesmere Port are backing a road safety week.

They are encouraging people to ‘Drive Less, Live More’ in support of a campaign by road safety charity Brake which runs from next Monday to Friday November 29.

Over the past 10 years government statistics show that in Cheshire alone 6,216 people have been killed or seriously injured on roads in the county.

The toll included 459 deaths and 5,757 people seriously injured. In 2014 in Cheshire there were 34 deaths and 514 people seriously injured.

‘Drive Less, Live More’ aims to encourage everyone to consider how they use the roads and whether there is an alternative to driving.

Walking, cycling or using public transport instead of driving would make the streets not only safer but more pleasant for everyone to use.

Colin Heyes, road safety manager for Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: “Firefighters will be out and about across Cheshire throughout the campaign to help raise awareness of road safety issues and encourage everyone to be aware of road safety, not only from behind the wheel but also when walking, cycling, skating or running.

“We are committed to reducing the number of people killed and seriously injured on our roads and so we are delighted to support Brake with this important campaign.”

Cheshire crews are organising a variety of road safety initiatives for all ages and types of road user, including school visits, ‘walking with a firefighter’ initiatives, shopper road safety advice and employee safer driving talks.

Ellesmere Port firefighters will be welcoming a Scouts to the Wellington Road station to talk to the young people about road safety.

Crews will also be going to Sainsbury’s to give safety advice to shoppers and college and school visits with a road safety theme are planned.

Brake works with communities and organisations across the UK to stop the tragedy of road deaths and injuries, make streets and communities safer for everyone and support people bereaved and seriously injured on roads.
