TWO decades after she first stepped through the gates as a pupil, a metal worker has built Whitby High School a new set.

Kate Owen, from Little Sutton, has designed and made decorative arched iron gates for her former school’s main entrances on Sycamore Drive and Overpool Road.

The 32-year-old, who runs Wrought in the Port workshop in Ellesmere Port, also produced simple barred gates for the side entrances.

She said: “I’m very pleased with the finished job, particularly the main entrance gates.

“I think the silver letters make the name plates stand out nicely and the seahorse emblem is a detail which I borrowed from the school badge – I can remember studying it in a history lesson nearly 20 years ago.

“For the past couple of years I had been thinking the school could do with some new gates, so I was absolutely delighted when they called and asked me to design some.”

She added: “I have got lots of happy memories of my years at Whitby High, but it felt quite strange to be visiting the school as a contractor, rather than a pupil. I had a real sense of déjà vu as I made my way round the corridors heading for the headteacher’s office.”
