THE 4TH annual Cheshire High Schools Fencing Tournament was the culmination of a year’s dedicated training by pupils under the guidance of international fencing coach Valerijs Scipanovs.

The tournament comprised a number of stages which have taken place over the past few months, with the final team matches held at Ellesmere Port Catholic High School.

All the fights were very close and exciting. Despite some brilliant attacks from Oliver Berry and Fred Norman of the King’s, the Bishops’ Blue Coat team captain Marco Simioni secured victory for his team with a final result of 4-1.

Coach Valerijs Scipanovs paid tribute to the young fencers on both teams – Juliano Simioni, Cameron Farley, Louis Houlders, James Roberts, Will Allen and Rishi Lakshmanan, Robert Way, Patric Hudson, Joshua Roberts, Mathew Leyland and Jake Kitchen – for their good technique and excellent tactical thinking in all of their fights.

Chester Fencing Club coach Valerijs said he was delighted with the high standard of fencing displayed throughout all stages of the tournament and was delighted to welcome the Ellesmere Port Catholic High School Fencing to the high school league.

The final positions of the tournament were: 1 Bishops’ Blue Coat High; 2 Tarporley High; 3 King’s School; 4 Christleton High; 5 Ellesmere Port Catholic High.
