ADEN SHANNON’S controversial injury-time penalty kept Welshpool among the leading pack with their first ever home win against the West Wales men.

The encounter looked to be heading for a draw when referee Brian James shocked everyone by pointing to the spot for a push in the box and sub Shannon coolly put away the penalty following the Haverfordwest protests.

Pool manager Tommi Morganhad some sympathy for the visitors who were clearly unhappy at the spot kick award.

“The penalty was a bit dubious and I felt a bit sorry for Haverfordwest as they had worked hard for a point,” he said.

It was Haverfordwest who drew first blood when Jack Christopher converted at the far post in the 22nd minute.

The Mid Wales men rallied when Davies popped up for the leveller five minutes from half time following an excellent run and cross from Chris Venables.

The second half became an increasing midfield battle in the heavy conditions at Maes y Dre, but both sides still had their moments before the contentious ending.
