BUDDING stage stars from Whitby High School performed in a play about the real-life murder of a gay student.
AS-level drama pupils Ross Spruce, Lily Thistlewood, Tom Moore, Jordan Frost, Kate Bird, Megan Stanners and Lauren Reynolds featured in the one-night showing of The Laramie Project at Action Transport Theatre in Ellesmere Port.
The play, about the murder of American student Matthew Shepard, 21, in Laramie, Wyoming, 10 years ago, allows the audience to examine people’s attitudes toward hate crimes and homophobia.
Matthew was tied to a cattle fence, beaten, robbed and left to die on a bitterly cold night in October.
Although he was discovered alive 18 hours later, Matthew never regained consciousness and died several days later due to severe head injuries.
Two young men were convicted of his murder and imprisoned.
Director Miss Kilbride said: “It was a fantastic performance. I hope through the use of theatre people can acknowledge we do not need to treat another person in a negative manner just because they may be different.”
All money raised from the performance will be given to Breast Cancer Research.
