WREXHAM manager Denis Smith is set to be glued to the telephone until the weekend as he steps up his search for a keeper to back up on-loan number one Ben Foster.

The latest setback for injury-prone veteran Andy Dibble has intensified Smith's search for a shot-stopper.

The Dragons' boss is confident of securing permission from the administrators and Football League to bring in another glovesman but says that is only part of the solution.

"The problem comes with trying to bring someone in as a number two," said Smith, ahead of tomorrow's relegation scrap against Torquay United.

"You're asking people to swap the bench somewhere else for our bench. I've got stacks of names and I've been through quite a few already but some are cup-tied for the LDV Trophy which is no good to me. There are always options - there's a lot of keepers around but there's no point bringing someone in if you can't get the right one."

With no estimate on when the unfortunate Dibble could return - "I've no idea", admitted Smith - the Wrexham boss could be heading into a crucial stage of the season in three competitions, with Stoke's Foster his only custodian.

"It's the same injury for Andy," said Smith, "the trouble with thigh and muscle injuries is you don't know how far they're going to go until you push them to the limit.

"He did a lot of handling work but the problem came when he started kicking."

And Smith has ruled out an unlikely return to first team action for 39-year-old football in the community officer Mark Morris after the former Racecourse shot-stopper played in the club's Pontins League fixture against Rochdale in midweek.

"God knows when he last played at any level," added Smith, "We're not talking about parks' football.."

If Smith is unable to find a keeper Wrexham are set to face Torquay with a bench of outfield players again.

The Dragons boss was left with mixed feelings after an international week which saw two Dragons win full international caps.

Defender Steve Roberts won his first cap for Wales with a very late cameo appearance against Hungary in Cardiff on Wednesday, while wing-back Carlos Edwards played a gruelling 90 minutes against the USA in Port of Spain, Trinidad, the same night.

"I think it's good for Steve to get his first full cap. It's been long overdue and hopefully is the first of many," said his manager.

"He won't want that to be his only cap. "Carlos had 90 minutes in a World Cup qualifier for Trinidad, but they're not going to be thinking about Wrexham on Saturday. "He's due back in the country today," said Smith yesterday..
