WITH just two minutes to go on Saturday, Wrexham fans must have been thinking their week couldn't any better.

Having seen their club move closer to safety with the High Court's decision to strip controversial owner Alex Hamilton of the Racecourse Ground, their team looked odds-on to end their away-day hoodoo thanks to Dennis Lawrence's first of the season.

But that was until the Dragons chose to press the self-destruct button, allowing Richard Walker to net two soft goals that gave the managerless Pirates only their second home win of the season.

In the build-up to the game, Wrexham chief Denis Smith had warned his side of the need to tighten up at the back.

Yet they failed to heed his advice, as they no doubt found out after the game.

A fuming Smith said: 'We have just lost a game that we should have won and that's not acceptable.

'It was not a classic game, but we were comfortable. But we switched off at set plays and it's cost us dear.'

The air of optimism going into the match was heightened by the return of Juan Ugarte.

Last season's goalscoring hero was given an immediate starting berth because of Dean Bennett's injury.

But his comeback lasted just 45 minutes, as the on-loan Crewe striker had to be withdrawn at the break with a knee injury.

And, to compound Smith's woes, Ugarte's replacement Robbie Foy also trudged off at the end with a hand injury.

Ugarte looked busy in the opening period, with his first chance coming 13 minutes in. But his shot was blocked by Rovers keeper Scott Shearer.

The Basque hitman then combined with strike partner Jon Walters, but again Shearer was the victor in a dual that saw Ugarte pick up the knock that brought a premature end to his afternoon.

The closest Wrexham came to breaking the deadlock was when Mark Jones curled a beauty which came back off the post.

Rovers were toothless up front in the first half, but right wing-back Simon Spender had to be alert to the danger on two separate occasions just before the interval.

The second period was a livelier affair and, inspired by Jones, the visitors began to take control.

And it was after the Wales star was cynically checked by Craig Disley that they took the lead.

Captain Darren Ferguson's clipped free-kick was flicked on by Andy Holt into the path of Lawrence, who slotted home to put Wrexham 1-0 up with 57 minutes on the clock.

As the home supporters began to grow restless, the tireless Walters then saw an angled drive saved by Shearer.

Yet little did they know what was to come next as Wrexham proceeded to hand their team the match.

After Spender had clipped the heels of substitute Jamie Forrester, the same man swung in a free-kick for the unmarked Walker to head in with two minutes to play.

Then another Rovers sub, Stuart Campbell, combined with Forrester to give Walker an even easier opportunity, which he duly converted three minutes into injury time to make it a bad end to a very good week for North Wales's only professional club.
