WREXHAM manager Denis Smith is hoping to introduce a new striker this afternoon after reaching agreement with a Premiership club on a loan deal.

The Dragons boss, who needs a short-term replacement for the injured Lee McEvilly, revealed on Saturday he had been given the go-ahead by both the manager and chairman of the club concerned and was waiting for the player's decision.

"There are a number of clubs from higher divisions also interested in taking the lad on loan," he said. "It's according to what he wants to do, but I'm hoping that our first-class training facilities and the way we try to play the game will swing the decision to us.

"His manager is quite happy for him to come to a League Two club because he knows we'll treat the lad well and that he will get regular football."

Smith said he had also

pointed to the success enjoyed at the Racecourse last season of Blackburn Rovers youngster, Matt Derbyshire, who scored 10 goals in 16 outings.

"Matt has become a better player as a result of his time with us and the experience stood him in good stead," added Smith. "I'm hoping his example will help us to bring in the lad."

The Racecourse boss was speaking after Saturday's 1-1 draw at Wycombe Wanderers in the opening match of the season, where an opportunist 45-yard strike by Wales under-21 international Mark Jones gave Wrexham a share of the spoils.

And Smith said he would not be surprised if Wales manager John Toshack decided to give the talented midfielder a senior cap this season.

"Its according to what John is looking for," Smith said. "If he wants someone to change the game, he is your man.

"He's getting more consistent, he's not making so many mistakes as he used to and he's got bundles of talent.

"Some of the things he does in training are amazing and he demonstrated that in the league on several occasions last year."
