WREXHAM manager Denis Smith has been honoured for his role in the community.

He has received the Rotary Service Award - a certificate presented by Wrexham Erddig Rotary Club to a person it believes has given exceptional service to the community.

It recognises Denis's positive and professional approach to managing the football team while coping with off-field difficulties brought about by a change of club ownership and the entry of the club into administration.

Barry Lloyd Jones, the Rotary Club's Vocational Service chairman, said: 'Denis's determined and practical approach to dealing with these distractions has been an example to all around him.

'He could have been forgiven for walking away from these problems, but it is not in his nature to walk away. He stayed and he has earned the great respect, not only of players and those directly associated with the football club but also of the general public.

'Without his presence and the example he has given to others through his team leadership, we fear that the football club may not have survived to date.

'By presenting this special award, the Rotary Club and its members are putting on record their appreciation of his exceptional service.'

He added: 'We were delighted to hear about the High Court decision regarding the football ground and would like to wish Denis and his football team success for this season and for the future well-being of the football club.'
