WREXHAM manager Denis Smith is hoping for a lucrative run in the Carling Cup following last night's first-round 4-1 victory against Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.

But after watching his League Two outclass their Championship opponents the Dragons boss made it clear that promotion is the top priority this season.

"I would be happy to have a cup run, but we need to get out of this division," he said.

"From a financial point of view it's good for the club to have a decent run in the competition.

"Doing well in the cup is a bonus and while we are not going to win the competition, if we have a decent run I will be delighted."

Wrexham, who were without Steve Evans, fielded a young back four in which Ryan Valentine, 24 this month, was the oldest.

"With Steve suspended and Dennis Lawrence gone to defend as well did was very pleasing," Smith said.
