FUTURE aces did their town proud at the North Wales Mini Tennis Schools Finals.

Around 150 of the best primary school players in the region descended on the North Wales Regional Tennis Centre in Wrexham having come through the 1,000-strong qualifying rounds.

There was double reason for Wrexham to celebrate as All Saints’ boys team won the Year 3 and Under Red title while St Mary’s’ girls team won the Year 6 and Under Green prize. St Peters’ boys team were runners-up in the same category.

“This was another great event, which attracted interest from right across North Wales,” said Pam Griffiths, North Wales tennis manager for Tennis Wales.

Mini tennis provides an opportunity for players aged 10 and under to enjoy the fun of competitive tennis.

Competitions are played at three levels according to age and ability – red for beginners, progressing to orange and then green for the most advanced players. Teams are split into four.

These rules are modified versions of the full game, on smaller courts with slower balls and small rackets.

As children get older, the court and racket sizes increase and the balls get bouncier.
