WREXHAM FC fans were handed a double dose of good news yesterday - with cash support and a League seal of approval for the new season.

The Dragon's new owners were given a £400,000 loan by Wrexham council to help them get back on an even financial footing.

And fans' favourite Neville Dickens and his business partner Geoff Moss received full backing to kick off the new season at a meeting with Football League officials in Preston. Administrators hope the £3.3m deal will be finalised next week.

Wrexham council's executive board issued a statement yesterday confirming its loan to the club over the Racecourse stadium.

It said it was making a "short term loan funding support to the consortium led by Neville Dickens and Geoff Moss, to underpin their bid to acquire the club and the stadium and to move it out of administration.

"The terms of the loan must remain confidential but the council has taken a strictly commercial view in coming to this decision."

Council leader Aled Roberts said the council would now work closely with the prospective purchasers and with partner organisations to secure long term viability.

Speaking after meeting the Football League, Mr Dickens praised the council for its support and said the amount of the loan had been "what they had asked for."

"We are quite comfortable with our budget for the forthcoming season," he said.

"Things are going well and we have had a very good meeting with the Football League.

"We needed to put our budget forward and prove that we could carry on with our fixtures for the forthcoming season."

Mr Dickens said the League was perfectly happy with the figures presented by himself and the administrators from the club who were present at the meeting.

"This has given us the green light to proceed. There's a lot of hard work to be done but we're keen to get on with it."
