POLICE today appealed for witnesses to an incident in which a parked car in Whitchurch had its front nearside window smashed causing around £200 damage.

It’s believed thieves targeted the black Ford Focus because of a sat nav system holder attached to the windscreen.

A police spokesperson said: “Nothing was stolen from the vehicle but the glove compartment had been searched. It’s likely the thief saw the empty sat nav holder and thought the system may have been left in the glove compartment.

“This incident serves as a reminder that not only should items like sat navs and mobile phones be removed from vehicles, but their holders and even sucker marks on the windscreen where a sat nav is sited, should not be left on show.”

The car was parked on the Brownlow Street car park near the Somerfield store just before 9am yesterday. The break-in was discovered when the owner returned to her vehicle at 5.15pm.

Police have appealed for witnesses to contact Whitchurch police station on 08457 444888. They particularly want to hear from a man aged about 60 who was passing by as the owner returned to the car.

The man, who was of medium build with white hair and wearing a woolly jumper, said he had spotted someone running off from the vehicle.

“We’d ask this man to please make contact as he may have seen something which will assist our inquiries,” added the police spokesperson.
