A NEGLECTED dog and its new-born puppy were left abandoned outside a grooming salon in Ellesmere Port.

The two-year-old female bullmastiff and the male puppy, thought to be only a day old, were tied to a tree in front of Jayde Dog Grooming in Merseyton Road at about 4pm on Friday.

Salon owner Carol Elliot said the mother was in a ‘horrendous’ state when she found her and is being cared for in a foster home.

She said: “She was emaciated, there’s no other word for it.

“Her condition was horrendous, you could count every rib. She was covered in scars and sores.

“The puppy must have only been a day old. We were worried because we didn’t know whether there was any other puppies.

“The mum had more milk so it indicates there were more.

“We got her in, cleaned her up and then took her straight to the vets. They couldn’t believe it.

“She’s OK, although she’s not put any weight on yet.”

Carol added: “She’s not the first dog to be abandoned outside the salon and she won’t be the last.

“But we’ve never had one tied to a tree. Usually people will come in and tell us.

“I’m just thankful they have brought her here and she will be looked after.

“If the owner wants to ring me anonymously and give us some background information it will help us to give the mum the best home.”

The mother has a good temperament but needs a home without young children. Carol says it will be five to six weeks before she can be rehomed. The puppy, named Diesel, is healthy and is feeding well.

People interested will be able to pay a visit and then there will need to be a home check. If you’re interested, call Carol on 0151 356 3560.
